The iPhone 18 Pro Is $1,199. Here Is What That Means for Your Wallet.

Last week we made four predictions about Apple's September 9 event and promised to grade ourselves afterward. Apple has now shown its hand, preorders open today, and the phones land in stores September 18. So here is the scorecard, and more importantly, what the real numbers mean for your family.

How we did

Prediction 1: No regular iPhone 18 this fall. Right. Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable. There is no standard iPhone 18. The more affordable models are being held until spring 2027.

Prediction 2: Prices go up, not down. Right. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, up from $1,099 for last year's iPhone 17 Pro. The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, up from $1,199.

Prediction 3: The foldable is real and expensive. Right. It is called the iPhone Duo. It starts at $1,999 and climbs to $3,199 for the largest storage option. Preorders open October 16 and it ships October 23, on its own schedule apart from the Pro models.

Prediction 4: Preorders September 12, phones September 18. Right. Apple confirmed preorders for Saturday, September 12, with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in stores Friday, September 18.

Four for four. We are not going to make a lap around the parking lot about it, because the two things we did not call are the two things that will actually show up in your budget.

What we did not see coming

We predicted that the new phones would cost more. We did not predict that Apple would raise the price of the phones already sitting on the shelf.

Apple also moved the price floor on several phones already in the lineup. The clearest example is the iPhone 16: it launched two years ago at $799, later moved below that level, and Apple is now showing a $799 starting price again.

Read that again. A two-year-old iPhone is once again carrying its original launch-day starting price. That makes used and refurbished previous-generation phones much more important for families who want capable technology without paying new-phone pricing.

We also assumed the foldable would arrive on the same schedule as everything else. It is not. That one is a footnote for most families, but we said we would grade honestly, so there it is. Apple's foldable phone is coming, but not this month.

The number that actually matters

The cheapest new iPhone announced this fall is $1,199, and it is a Pro.

Here is the family math. Three phones at $1,199 comes to $3,597 before tax, before cases, before screen protectors, and before anything gets financed. Even the very cheapest new iPhone Apple sells today, the 17e at $699, puts a family of three at $2,097 before tax for three of the smallest phones in the lineup.

And there is no standard iPhone 18 arriving this season. For most Oklahoma families, that is the practical story of this event: the new entry point is firmly premium, while older models are not automatically becoming bargains at Apple.

If you are keeping your current phone

You are in better shape than the headlines suggest, and this year that is truer than usual. A phone that is two or three years old still handles messaging, maps, banking, photos, and streaming without complaint. What makes it feel old is usually a very fixable thing.

The three we see most:

• Battery. If it dies by mid-afternoon or shuts off in the cold, that is a part, not a phone.
• Screen or back glass. Cracks spread, and a spreading crack turns a cheap fix into an expensive one.
• Charging port. If you have to hold the cable at an angle, it is usually lint or a worn port. Both are fixable.

A battery replacement or screen repair costs a fraction of $1,199 and takes a fraction of the time. If you are a student running a phone that is one bad battery away from dying during a class you cannot miss, that is the entire fix. You do not need a new phone. You need a battery.

If you are trading, the clock is already running

This is worth knowing today. Trade-in values do not hold steady between the announcement and the release. Across the last three iPhone launches, one tracking study found that values dropped for 117 of the 156 models it followed in that short window between announcement day and phones-in-hand day. The longer you sit on a phone you have already decided to part with, the less it is worth.

So if you are upgrading, do not let the old phone sit in a drawer for three weeks.

1. Back it up, then confirm the backup actually restored to the new phone
2. Sign out of your Apple or Google account, because a locked device is worth far less
3. Take photos of its condition before you hand it to anyone
4. Get a real number on what it is worth before you accept the first offer
5. Only erase it after the transfer is fully confirmed

We will give you a straight number on what your phone is worth, and if Apple or your carrier is offering you more than we can, we will tell you to take their deal. We would rather lose one trade than have you find out later that we were not shooting straight with you.

If you are buying, buy proven

Last year's flagship is still a flagship. It takes the same photos it took in August, it gets software updates, and it works with every case and charger you already own.

That has always been our argument. This year Apple made it for us. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max were discontinued the moment the new models were announced, which means the best-reviewed phones of last season are now only available used and refurbished. A proven previous-generation device is not the consolation prize this fall. In a season where the entry point is $1,199, it is the sensible play, and it is a large part of what we keep in stock across all three stores.
